The Inaugural Leadership Summit of the Judges’ and Psychiatrists’ Leadership Initiative

For more than 10 years, the Judges’ and Psychiatrists’ Leadership Initiative (JPLI) has brought together experts in the field of mental health and criminal justice to address the overcriminalization of people who enter the justice system.

On May 12, 2021, JPLI held its inaugural leadership summit celebrating judicial and psychiatric leadership to improve outcomes for people with behavioral health needs. The summit included the presentation of the Judge Stephen S. Goss Memorial Award for leadership by a judge and a psychiatrist. It also featured a candid discussion about competency to stand trial based on the recently released report Just and Well: How States Are Rethinking Competency to Stand Trial.
